Growing in character is about knowing when to apply the brakes – when to use self-control. It’s about successfully transitioning out of childhood into adulthood. A person of character doesn’t make foolish choices and then hope to avoid the consequences, but rather avoids the activity that leads to those consequences by the use of self-control. Exercising self-control in the choices you face builds your character – which in turn strengthens your ability to exercise self-control.
