Although avoiding pressure situations is the best defense against negative influences – it is not always possible to do so. For this reason, it is important to know how to handle a pressure situation when you’re in it. There are three steps that can help you to resist pressures from others. This applies to both one-on-one and group situations.
Make a plan. Know where you won’t go, and what you won’t do. Have an exit strategy – cell phone, money for taxi – a way to leave.
Say what you believe. If you don’t want to go somewhere or do something – make that known. Be clear. Be firm.
Stick to your plan. If the pressure continues after saying what you believe – use your exit strategy – leave.
